Year 5 Technology Workshop
On Friday the 17th June Bournemouth School hosted a group of 48 Year 5 students from local primary schools: Kinson, Kingsleigh, Christ the King and Queen’s Park Academy.
Having spent part of the morning at Bournemouth School for Girls working in the Science Department, they moved to us for lunch and for an afternoon activity based in Design and Technology. Pupils had the chance to work as teams on two challenges, the first to design and make a game and the second to design and make a clock with the same theme as the morning, based around the Oceanarium. Both tasks required them to plan the task and then to work with a range of materials and simple tools to produce a prototype outcome.
Sixth Form students supported the event by acting as consultants to the groups of Year 5 pupils and offering advice and help where needed. The boys and girls enjoyed the task and had the opportunity to see the 3D printer and laser cutter in use, to help produce dice and other playing parts for the games.
Key skills that the children had to grasp involved team work and co-operation and the ability to negotiate a solution to a problem. The atmosphere was excellent and the level of participation and enthusiasm a pleasure to see.
